Exchange Rate: 2008, was an international performance exchange organized by Elana Mann in response to the 2008 U.S. presidential election. Mann also contributed artwork to the project. In all thirty-eight artists living in sixteen different countries participated Exchange Rate. With the aid of the website exchangerate2008.com, participating artists produced, exchanged, and interpreted performance directions. These actions took place all over the world, from the street of Seoul, South Korea to the alleys of Tel Aviv, Israel. There were two Exchange Rate events in Los Angeles. One held at Sea and Space explorations in partnership with the Audacity of Desperation exhibit, organized by Jessica Lawless and Sarah Ross. The other was held on the eve of election day, November 4, at Remy's on Temple. The artworks produced for the exchange mirrored and critiqued the pageantry we saw in the mass media as part of the presidential race. The project also added an alternative critical voice to the blogs, websites and virtual networks that emerged in 2008 as the most influential arena in the U.S. presidential election. The project is documented in a book Exchange Rate: 2008, published in 2009 designed and created in collaboration with Roman Jaster. |
